The Aurora School (Aurora), founded by parents in cooperation with The Arc of Loudoun in 2003, is a caring, educational community that offers a quality education for individuals with special needs. We challenge our students to achieve personal excellence and independence. We have a License to operate, from the Virginia Board of Education.
Aurora is a private day school that uses the principles of applied behavior analysis to provide an individualized education for students ages 5 to 22 with intellectual and developmental disabilities, primarily autism.
Our Curricula and Activities
We offer a wide variety of special education programs. Our curricula and activities are made to meet the individual student’s needs. Among the skills we teach our students are: Verbal behavior; Social Skills, Self-Management, Problem-Solving Skills, Math, and Reading.
Using the latest techniques, curricula, and technology, students and their families become active partners in their individualized education program.
Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), licensed teachers, Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Occupational Therapists (OTs) are part of every student’s team. Many of our staff are active participants in research at local, national, and international conferences specializing in Applied Behavior Analysis, Autism and Behavior Management.
Aurora is also a practicum and internship site for several notable Behavior Analysis, Special Education, and Psychology Programs. We partner with several universities.
We believe that education is most effective when its application is based on valid research findings from the fields of education and behavior analysis. Aurora is a stimulating learning environment for both its students and staff. We provide a collaborative, progressive, and innovative learning environment for children of all ages and developmental disabilities.
Teaching practices at The Aurora School are derived primarily from the principles and concepts of applied behavior analysis (ABA). The cornerstones of the program are positive reinforcement, continuous measurement of learning, and graphic-displayed data analysis. Verbal behavior, social skills, self-management, problem-solving skills, math, and reading are all systematically taught via evidence-based curricula, as well as curricula developed in-house by our teachers and behavior analysts.
